What Is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda — from the Sanskrit words Ayus (life) and Veda (knowledge) — is the science of life. It is one of the world's oldest and most comprehensive systems of medicine, originating in India more than 5,000 years ago and documented in the four Vedas.

Unlike modern medicine, which primarily targets disease after it manifests, Ayurveda is fundamentally preventive. It identifies each person's unique constitutional type (Prakriti), understands the root cause of imbalance (Vikruti), and restores health through diet, lifestyle, herbal medicines, and classical therapies.

"Hitahitam sukham dukham ayustasya hitahitam. Manam cha tach cha yatroktam ayurvedah sa uchyate." — Charaka Samhita (Definition of Ayurveda)

At Prakash Nethralaya, we practice Ayurveda exactly as described in the classical texts — Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, and Ashtanga Hridayam — without shortcuts or modern dilutions.

Core Principles of Ayurveda

🌱
Treat the Root Cause

Ayurveda does not suppress symptoms — it identifies and addresses the underlying imbalance (Nidana). Treating the root cause prevents recurrence and produces lasting health.

🧬
Individualised Treatment

Two people with the same disease may have different Doshas, different Prakriti, and different causative factors. Ayurvedic treatment is always personalised — never one-size-fits-all.

⚖️
Balance of Tridosha

Health is the state of balanced Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Disease arises when these three forces fall out of balance. All Ayurvedic treatment works to restore this equilibrium.

🍃
Diet & Lifestyle First

Pathya (right diet and lifestyle) is the first and most powerful medicine. Ayurveda emphasises that what you eat, when you eat, and how you live are the foundation of health.

🌊
Panchakarma — Deep Purification

When disease is deep-rooted, Ayurveda uses Panchakarma — five classical purification procedures — to remove accumulated toxins (Ama) from tissues at a cellular level.

🔄
Rasayana — Rejuvenation

After purification, Rasayana therapies nourish and rebuild the tissues (Dhatus), strengthen immunity (Ojas), and slow the ageing process — restoring vitality and resilience.

The Tridosha Theory

Vata, Pitta & Kapha — The Three Doshas

The Tridosha theory is the cornerstone of Ayurvedic medicine. Every person is born with a unique combination of the three Doshas that determines their physical constitution, personality, and susceptibility to disease. Understanding your Dosha is the first step toward personalised healing.

🌬️
Vata
वात — The Force of Movement
Elements: Air + Ether (Space)
DryLightColdMobileSubtle

Vata governs all movement in the body — from the beating of the heart to the firing of neurons. When balanced, Vata brings creativity, vitality, and clear communication. When imbalanced, it causes dryness, pain, anxiety, and degeneration.

Governs
  • Nervous system function
  • Circulation and breathing
  • Retinal and optic nerve health
  • Degenerative conditions (RP, optic atrophy)

Pitta
पित्त — The Force of Transformation
Elements: Fire + Water
HotSharpLightOilyLiquid

Pitta governs all transformation and metabolism — digestion, vision, intelligence, and body temperature. The sub-Dosha Alochaka Pitta specifically governs vision. Imbalanced Pitta causes inflammation, burning sensations, and inflammatory eye conditions.

Governs
  • Alochaka Pitta — the eye's visual faculty
  • Digestion and metabolism
  • Inflammatory eye conditions (Glaucoma, Uveitis)
  • Intraocular pressure regulation

Kapha
कफ — The Force of Structure
Elements: Water + Earth
HeavySlowColdOilyStable

Kapha provides structure, lubrication, and stability to the body. It governs growth, immunity, and the nourishment of tissues. Imbalanced Kapha leads to congestion, weight gain, lethargy, and metabolic disorders like Diabetes and PCOD.

Governs
  • Eye lubrication and tear secretion
  • Immune function (Ojas)
  • Hormonal and metabolic conditions
  • PCOD, Diabetes, Obesity

Panchakarma — The Five Classical Procedures

Classical Purification

The Five Procedures of Panchakarma

Panchakarma literally means "five actions." These are five classical Ayurvedic procedures that purify the body at a deep level — removing accumulated toxins (Ama) from tissues and channels (Srotas). Panchakarma is always preceded by preparation (Poorvakarma) and followed by a recovery protocol (Paschatkarma).

At Prakash Nethralaya, all five procedures are available under the guidance of our qualified Vaidyas, administered only when clinically indicated for a patient's specific condition.

1
Vamana — Therapeutic Emesis
Controlled medicated vomiting to eliminate excess Kapha from the upper respiratory and digestive tract. Used for asthma, skin conditions, and Kapha-dominant diseases.
2
Virechana — Therapeutic Purgation
Medicated purgation to eliminate excess Pitta from the liver, gallbladder, and small intestine. Commonly used for eye diseases, skin conditions, and inflammatory disorders.
3
Basti — Medicated Enema
Administration of medicated oils or decoctions through the rectum — considered the most powerful Panchakarma procedure for Vata disorders, joint diseases, and neurological conditions.
4
Nasya — Nasal Administration
Medicated oils or powders administered through the nasal passage to cleanse the head, neck, and sensory organs — especially effective for eye, ear, and neurological conditions.
5
Raktamokshana — Bloodletting
Classical blood purification procedure using leech therapy or Siravyadha. Used for skin diseases, inflammatory conditions, and circulatory disorders. Selectively indicated.

Our Approach

How We Practice Ayurveda at Prakash Nethralaya

Classical Ayurveda, not a diluted version. Here's what every patient can expect from a consultation with our Vaidyas.

Step 01
Nadi Pariksha & Prakriti Assessment

The first consultation begins with Nadi Pariksha (pulse diagnosis) — the classical Ayurvedic technique of reading the state of all three Doshas through the radial pulse. Combined with a full Prakriti (constitutional) assessment, this gives the doctor a complete picture of the patient's baseline state.

Step 02
Nidana — Understanding the Root Cause

Our doctors take a thorough case history — dietary habits, lifestyle, sleep patterns, emotional state, previous treatments, and family history. This allows identification of the Nidana (causative factors) rather than simply naming the disease.

Step 03
Modern Diagnostic Correlation

For eye conditions, we review modern diagnostic reports — visual field tests, OCT scans, fundus photographs, and IOP readings. These are correlated with the classical Ayurvedic pathology to confirm the Samprapti (disease progression) and set treatment goals.

Step 04
Personalised Chikitsa (Treatment Plan)

The treatment plan is completely personalised — specifying which Panchakarma procedures are indicated, which Rasayana medicines to take, dietary modifications (Pathya-Apathya), and a realistic timeline for expected results.

Step 05
Classical Medicines — No Substitutes

We prescribe only classical Ayurvedic formulations — Ghrita, Churna, Kwatha, Asava — prepared authentically in our in-house pharmacy. We do not use proprietary patent medicines or branded substitutes for classical formulas.

Step 06
Regular Follow-up & Monitoring

Ayurvedic treatment is a process, not a one-time event. We schedule regular follow-up consultations — in-clinic or video — to monitor progress, adjust medicines, and ensure the treatment plan is working effectively.

Classical Foundation

The Texts We Practice From

Our doctors are trained in and practice from the three foundational classical texts of Ayurveda.

📜
Charaka Samhita
Internal Medicine (Kayachikitsa)

The primary text on internal medicine — covering diagnosis, disease pathology, herbal formulations, Rasayana, and the philosophical foundations of Ayurveda. Attributed to Acharya Charaka, ca. 600 BCE.

📖
Sushruta Samhita
Surgery & Eye Diseases (Shalakya Tantra)

The primary text on surgery and specialised treatments — including Shalakya Tantra, the classical science of eye, ear, nose, and throat diseases. The source of our Ayurvedic ophthalmology protocols.

📚
Ashtanga Hridayam
Comprehensive Synthesis

Written by Acharya Vagbhata (ca. 7th century CE), this text synthesises the knowledge of Charaka and Sushruta into a concise, highly practical reference — the most widely studied text in modern Ayurvedic colleges.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked About Ayurveda

Ayurveda is an empirical science developed over thousands of years of clinical observation and systematic documentation. Many Ayurvedic formulations have been studied in modern research — compounds like Triphala, Ashwagandha, and Brahmi have robust evidence bases. However, Ayurveda's true strength lies in its holistic, individualised approach — which is precisely what randomised clinical trials (designed for standardised interventions) find difficult to capture. Our clinical outcomes — documented through visual field tests, OCT scans, and patient-reported outcomes — are evidence of Ayurveda's effectiveness in practice.
In most cases, yes. Many of our patients continue their conventional medications (eye drops, systemic medicines) while beginning Ayurvedic treatment. Our doctors review all current medications before prescribing and are careful about potential interactions. As Ayurvedic treatment progresses and conditions improve, some patients are able to reduce their conventional medication doses under their allopathic doctor's supervision — but this is always done collaboratively, never unilaterally.
Ayurvedic treatment addresses the root cause of disease — which takes time. For acute or functional conditions, results may be seen in 4–8 weeks. For chronic or degenerative conditions (like Glaucoma or Retinitis Pigmentosa), a meaningful treatment course is typically 3–6 months, with ongoing maintenance thereafter. We are transparent about timelines during the first consultation — we do not make unrealistic promises, and we document progress objectively throughout.
Classical Ayurvedic medicines, when prescribed correctly and sourced authentically, are generally very safe. Our medicines are prepared in-house using classical formulas — we do not use heavy metals without proper Shodhana (purification) processes. Side effects are uncommon when medicines are appropriate to the patient's constitution and condition — which is why Prakriti assessment is done before every prescription. Self-medication with Ayurvedic medicines without a doctor's guidance can, however, cause problems — especially for patients with liver or kidney conditions.
Most Ayurvedic products sold commercially are proprietary formulations — new combinations of herbs created by companies, often marketed with general health claims. Classical Ayurveda refers to formulations documented in the ancient texts — Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, and Ashtanga Hridayam. These classical formulas have stood the test of thousands of years of clinical use. At Prakash Nethralaya, we prescribe classical formulas — not commercial proprietary products — and prepare many of them in our own pharmacy to ensure authenticity and quality.
