Key Takeaways — Age Related Macular Degeneration & Ayurveda
AMD affects the macula — the central part of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision
Ayurveda classifies AMD under Timira and Linganasha — disorders caused by aggravated Pitta and Vata
Early Dry AMD responds well to Ayurvedic Rasayana and Netra Tarpana therapy
Wet AMD requires immediate conventional intervention; Ayurveda supports recovery and slows progression

Diet, lifestyle, and Panchakarma play a key role in halting further degeneration

Understanding Age Related Macular Degeneration in Ayurveda

In Ayurveda, the eyes are governed primarily by Alochaka Pitta — a sub-type of Pitta dosha responsible for vision and light perception. Age-Related Macular Degeneration correlates closely with the Ayurvedic conditions of Timira (diminished vision) and in advanced stages, Linganasha (loss of vision).

As we age, Vata dosha naturally increases in the body, leading to dryness, degeneration, and reduced nourishment of the Drishti (optic structures). Simultaneously, chronic Pitta aggravation — caused by excess heat, stress, spicy foods, and screen exposure — damages the delicate retinal tissue over years.

The combination of aggravated Pitta (causing inflammation and oxidative damage) and increased Vata (causing dryness and degeneration) creates the perfect environment for macular breakdown.

Ayurvedic treatment aims to: pacify Pitta and Vata doshas, nourish Majja Dhatu (nerve tissue) and Rasa Dhatu (nutritive fluid), strengthen Ojas (vital essence) through Rasayana therapy, and clear Srotas (micro-channels) to restore proper nourishment to the retina.

🌬️ Vata

Excess Pitta causes oxidative damage and inflammation in retinal blood vessels, accelerating macular cell death. Managed with cooling therapies and Pitta-pacifying diet.

🔥 Pitta

Increased Vata with age leads to dryness, poor circulation, and degeneration of the macula. Netra Tarpana and Basti therapies help counter Vata excess.

P
🌊 Kapha

In early stages, vitiated Kapha can obstruct Srotas (channels), reducing nourishment to the retina. Kapha-clearing herbs like Triphala are used to restore flow.

Symptoms of Age Related Macular Degeneration

Blurred or fuzzy central vision
Straight lines appearing wavy or distorted (metamorphopsia)
Dark or empty spot in the centre of vision
Difficulty reading fine print even with glasses
Colours appearing less bright or washed out
Difficulty recognising faces
Increased sensitivity to glare
Need for brighter light while reading
Gradual increase in blind spot size

Ayurvedic Causative Factors (Nidana)

  • Chronic Pitta aggravation due to excess spicy, sour, and fried foods
  • Prolonged screen exposure and blue light damage (Atiyoga of Drishti)
  • Natural Vata increase with aging leading to retinal dryness
  • Suppression of natural urges (Vega Dharana) — especially tears and sleep
  • Excessive exposure to bright sunlight without protection
  • Chronic stress and anger increasing Pitta and Vata
  • Smoking and alcohol consumption damaging retinal microvasculature
  • Genetic predisposition and family history of AMD
  • Cardiovascular disease and hypertension reducing retinal blood flow

Our Ayurvedic Treatment Protocol

Treatment is always individualised after full assessment.

1
Detailed Dosha Assessment
A thorough Nadi Pariksha (pulse diagnosis) and eye examination is done to determine your specific Dosha imbalance, AMD stage, and overall constitution before designing a personalised treatment plan.
2
Netra Tarpana (Medicated Eye Bath)
Warm medicated ghee — typically prepared with Triphala, Shatavari, or Yashtimadhu — is pooled around the eyes using a dough dam. This deeply nourishes the retina, relieves dryness, and strengthens Alochaka Pitta.
3
Nasya (Nasal Administration)
Medicated oils or herbal preparations are administered through the nostrils to clear Srotas leading to the eyes, improving circulation and nourishment to the optic region. Anu Taila is commonly used.
4
Virechana (Therapeutic Purgation)
A controlled Panchakarma procedure to eliminate excess Pitta from the body. Virechana clears the root cause of macular inflammation and prevents further oxidative damage to retinal tissue.
5
Rasayana Therapy
Potent rejuvenating herbs — Triphala Rasayana, Saptamrita Lauh, Amalaki, Brahmi, and Shatavari — are prescribed to rebuild Ojas, strengthen nerve tissue (Majja Dhatu), and slow degeneration.
6
Shirodhara & Stress Management
Continuous stream of medicated oil on the forehead calms the nervous system, reduces chronic stress-driven Pitta aggravation, and promotes deep healing of ocular nerves.

  • Pomegranate and blueberries — powerful retinal antioxidants

✗ To Avoid (Apathya)

  • Spicy, sour, and overly salty foods — aggravate Pitta
  • Fried and processed foods — increase oxidative stress
  • Alcohol and smoking — directly damage retinal microvasculature
  • Excess red meat — increases inflammation
  • Refined sugar and white flour — spike blood sugar damaging retinal vessels
  • Cold drinks and ice cream — impair Agni and Kapha circulation
  • Excessive tea and coffee — Vata aggravating
  • Staying awake late at night — Vata increase, eye strain

Frequently Asked Questions

Ayurveda cannot reverse advanced AMD or restore vision already lost due to severe macular damage. However, in early to moderate Dry AMD, Ayurvedic therapies like Netra Tarpana, Rasayana, and Panchakarma have shown significant results in slowing progression, improving contrast sensitivity, and stabilising remaining vision. The goal is to halt further degeneration and improve quality of life — not to promise a cure. Every patient is assessed individually and given an honest prognosis.

Dry AMD (atrophic) corresponds primarily to Vata-Pitta imbalance with gradual degeneration of retinal tissue — this responds better to Ayurvedic treatment. Wet AMD (neovascular) involves abnormal blood vessel growth and is a medical emergency requiring immediate anti-VEGF injections from an ophthalmologist. Ayurveda plays a supportive role in Wet AMD — reducing inflammation, supporting recovery, and preventing recurrence — but should never replace conventional emergency treatment in acute Wet AMD.

A minimum commitment of 3 to 6 months is recommended to see meaningful results. The treatment involves an initial Panchakarma detox phase (typically 7–21 days), followed by long-term Rasayana therapy and diet management. Patients who follow the protocol consistently and make the necessary dietary and lifestyle changes typically report stabilisation of vision within 3 months. Regular follow-up every 4–6 weeks is essential.

Yes. We offer video consultations for patients across India and internationally. After the initial consultation, our Vaidya reviews your OCT scan reports, fundus photographs, and medical history.
